Club Meeting Guest Speaker News

Announcing our Guest Speaker for October - Dejan Ninic

Dejan Ninic is a consulting mechanical engineer in the field of Vehicle Dynamics and Structural Mechanics. His business is particularly aimed at motorsports, where the demand of engineering is customer/vehicle specific.

Since 2006 he has been working in Europe in the World Rally Championship, European Rally Championship and French National Championship with Super 1600 and World Rally Cars. As of December 2009 he has returned to Australia, with only casual commitments in Europe.

His professional obligations are primarily in Australia. He has experience in preparing racing cars for circuits, tarmac rallies, gravel rallies and snow rallies.

Part of the reason he has returned to Australia is his desire to start day courses on racing car design and development, racing car preparation, racing car analysis and vehicle dynamics. It is in his nature to instruct and he believes that he can make a significant contribution to the Australian motorsport scene if he can achieve that objective well.

Driver's worked with internationally: Chris Atkinson, Dani Sordo, Sebastien Ogier, Kris Meeke, Juho Hanninen, Simon Jean-Joseph, Toni Gardemeister, Evegny Novikov (& Dale Moscatt), Urmo Aava, Conrad Rautenbach, Paolo Andreucci, Felice Re + about 20 more "gentlemen drivers" in France, Italy and Spain.

A Summary of Dejan's presentation to NSW Porsche Club on 12th October:

A car's differential can have a signficant effect to its handling according to the manner in which the engine's torque is delivered to the driven wheels. The differential's overall effect to the car's performance is often discussed between motoring enthusiasts but these discussions are more often based on experience rather than science. How does differential preload affect the understeer/oversteer characteristics of the car? What are differential "ramps" and how do I know which ramps are best for me? What is a "spool" and why do some drivers like using it and others not? Is the Torsen the best that money can buy? Which differential should I buy if I wanted to build a gravel rally car?

This presentation will blend racing experience with the theory of mechanisms applicable to differentials to give club members a deeper understanding on the differential so that they can make informed decisions on which differential to install in their car and how to tune it to improve it's performance.

The operation, advantages and disadvantages of several different types of differentials available on the market, including the Torsen type differential will be discussed, including their influence to the handling of a RWD car.

Some fundamental engineering principles will be explained but the complex mathematics will be omitted. A question and answers session after the presentation will allow the club to engage in the presentation and seek further information regarding their own car."
